Sausalito is a gorgeous town, plain and simple. Many spots on this list lie just a hop, skip, and jump away from the sea, and many of them take full advantage of that fact. From an Italian-owned pizzeria and restaurant to a small joint offering Roman-style pinsa, there’s a lot to eat (and love) here — but who has the best pizza in Sausalito?

Let’s take a peek and find out, shall we?

The Best Pizza in Sausalito, CA: Top 3

Taste of Rome

For those of my readers who love a good ol’ fashioned wood-fired brick oven pie (i.e., all if not most of you), Taste of Rome is the spot to be in Sausalito. They specialize in authentic Italian coffee, snacks, and yes — pizza; and all in all, it’s incredibly well done. Whether this is due to their chefs’ dedication, the incredibly quality of their ingredients, or their unique je ne sais quoi, I can’t say. I just know that it’s killer.

The shop that creates all of this is a quaint building that takes up a corner near Sausalito’s docks, meaning a few things. While it’s a great view and adorable area, the largest perk is the availability of organic ingredients, freshly caught seafood, and fresh produce.

As for their pies, it’s a classic affair. A relatively small menu allows them to focus on using high-quality ingredients and excellent techniques to craft an affordable, delicious Neapolitan pie. Whether you want a Margherita, San Marzano tomatoes and all, or a simple prosciutto pie, I can promise each bite is worth the wait.

Poggio Trattoria

Poggio Trattoria is incredibly well-known in the Sausalito and San Francisco communities for classic wood-fired pies. This local love has earned them recognition in multiple national and local publications, including Eater’s Essential 17 for the county. While that’s praise in and of itself, the truth is that Poggio Trattoria fully deserves a spot in our list of the best pizza in Sausalito.

This is unquestionably due to their insistence on quality; local, fresh, organic ingredients make for refreshing and delightfully creative pies, and their dough boasts a perfect combination of charred crisp and airy chew. Keep in mind that Poggio Trattoria is an Italian joint first, meaning their pizza menu is limited, but each pie is fine-tuned to perfection. Add in the fact that they’re surprisingly affordable for the area, and you really can’t go wrong with this spot.

While I personally recommend their Soppressata, topped with salami and castelvetrano (green) olives, the other options are no slouch either. From a chanterelle and broccoli pie to a classic Calabrian salsiccia (optionally topped with an egg and arugula for the adventurous), there’s something tasty for everyone at Poggio Trattoria.

Sandrino Sausalito

For our third (and final) pick as the best pizza in Sausalito, we have Sandrino Sausalito. This joint comes from the minds of Italian husband and wife chef duo Allesandro and Monika. They came from Trento, Italy — at the foot of the Dolomites — in 2015 to pursue the opportunity to run a family-style restaurant. Since then, they’ve earned nearly unanimous community love thanks, and it shows.

Their recipes are all family affairs; the dough is light, airy, and thin (without being soggy); the ingredients fresh, and their wine Italian. In short, they’re the perfect spot for a cheeky little date night, pizza or not. Note that, as these pies are made with love, you cannot alter them — they come as they are.

While that simple fact may not be for everyone, to me, it shows a love for the couple’s craft. They know that what they do is damn good, and they’d prefer to let the food speak for itself than cater to everyone to step through their doors — and that’s something I can respect. Give Sandrino Sausalito a try the next time you’re in the area and soak in the gorgeous surroundings.

Top 2 Honorable Mentions

While the joints above are genuinely great, they’re not the only games in town. As such, it feels only right to highlight a duo of excellent restaurants that offer fantastic pizza. The spots below aren’t technically pizza restaurants, but rather restaurants that serve pizza (or pinsa, in one case), but their menus are top-notch nonetheless.

With that said, let’s check out a couple great spots in lil’ old Sausalito.

Bar Bocce

Bar Bocce is a gorgeous bar located on the docks of Sausalito, allowing its guests to gaze out over a fire on the deck to the sea beyond. It’s gorgeous, and their food is, well, fantastic. The pies are their specialty — such as the pear, candied walnut, gorgonzola, and balsamic pizza — but they also offer sandwiches, full plates, and more. Ultimately, I highly recommend you give Bar Bocce a try.

Their food is delicious, the view gorgeous, and the ambiance perfect; in short, they’re great.

Zalta Mediterranean

Zalta Mediterranean is (surprise!) a Mediterranean restaurant first and foremost. While they do serve pizza, this is why they didn’t make the top list. Their pizzas are incredibly well-designed, but the simple reality is that the rest of their menu deserves as much attention as the pies. On the note of pies, though, they take the Roman method of pinsa (more of a flatbread-style pie) to great heights.

With only five pinsa on the menu, I highly recommend you stop in for a few hours, grab a bite and drink (or two), and relax — Zalta will take good care of you.
